PG&E: Odor near Bay Point is harmless

BAY Instant -- A stench that permeated the air around a Bay Point elementary school stiff several students and teachers to go home sick Thursday, but officials say the odor won't last and is less harmless.

Students, teachers and administrators at Shore Acres Basic School on Marina Drive smelled the foulness created by an hollow project at the foot of McAvoy Road. PG&E crews are removing lay from the bottom of a wastewater pond, the company said in a news release. The data is more than 25 years old, the company said, and carries a strong petroleum-like odor.

"We give excuses for any unpleasant odors (people) may have experienced," PG&E said in the release. "Ongoing air monitoring at the placement indicates that although these odors are certainly a nuisance, they do not present a health concern."

PG&E fastened down work on the project Thursday afternoon, a spokeswoman said, and profession won't resume until additional odor controls are put into place. The company bought the wastewater pond from Exterior several years ago and the project is part of an effort to make the site to the largest contiguous impulsive wetland in the East Bay.
