Dozens of Timaru residents have hit back at the peak of the district's economic and tourism development agency, saying the municipality's mystery smell is not a reality of living by the sea.

Aoraki Development Issue and Tourism chief executive Wendy Smith said on Thursday she was distressed that several stories in the Timaru Herald about the odour were a media beat-up and that smells were part of being a rural community with a haven.

However, the Timaru Herald was contacted by 21 people who disagreed with Mrs Smith.

Tony Lister, a lifestyle member of the Timaru Yacht and Power Boat Club, said the sniff had been around for years.

"Visitors to the club always comment on it – 'You'll be remembered for your graciousness . . . and your smell'."

Before the Sanford fish processing plant was set up next to the join, his understanding was that it would not smell.

"You're always going to get a wee bit [of an odour]. When it's at its worst it can be [offensive]. If it was near my strain I would be pretty upset," he said.
