Autobiography is full of evocative odors. Some are pleasant. Some are unpleasant. Some unpleasant ones are oddly toothsome when they haven’t been experienced in a while.

For instance, I grew up on a farm. Sometimes, during a drive a horse through the country in the open air, I pick up the aroma of cattle, which is predominantly the odor of, uh, manure. That’s not a fair smell, but in my case, it brings back memories. It takes me back and conjures up others, such as the dry, dusty smell of oats in a barrel. Or primitive honeysuckle vines. Only the last is pleasant, but I miss them all.

Another foul odor is the peevish aroma of a high-school locker room, with sweat-drenched accoutrements hanging from racks. It makes me visualize those long-ago two-a-day practices in August.

Hospitals have identifying odors, such as what flows out of bandages, bottles of rubbing liquor and the ammonia of cleaners. Bathroom odors vary by degree of cleanliness.

The blunt sensation of a woman’s perfume as she passes in a hall. The powdery fragrance of a little baby. One of my favorites is freshly mowed grass. Another is shower shortly before it actually falls.
